With COVID-19 restrictions easing up in California and around the country, many people are planning road trips to visit friends and family this summer. During this season of sun and fun, every driver should be aware that this is one of the most dangerous times to drive out of the entire year. That’s why it has its own nickname -- the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer.
When Are the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer?
The 100 Deadliest Days of Summer is the time period from Memorial Day to Labor Day, a time that is informally considered “summer,” even though the actual summer solstice is not until mid-June. During this time, many people hit the road to attend barbecues, sporting events, amusement park trips, and more on Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day.
Since many summer festivities involve drinking, combined with the fact that there are simply more vehicles on the road in general, it is typical for the rate of car crashes to increase during the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer.
According to the National Safety Council, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day may see the following statistics for 2021:
- Memorial Day: 415 deaths on U.S. roads
- Fourth of July: 405 deaths on U.S. roads
- Labor Day: 390 deaths on U.S. roads
Compare this to other holidays throughout the year, and the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer is better understood:
- Christmas Day: 340 deaths on U.S. roads
- New Year’s Day: 384 deaths on U.S. roads
