Mercedes-Benz has recently turned heads with the recall of over 292,000 vehicles in the United States. As of May 2022, the German automaker released a document urgently asking drivers to stop using their vehicles. The document states that moisture in the brake booster housing has been linked to corrosion, decreasing brake performance.
According to a statement made by Mercedes, it was found that hard braking led to mechanical damage to the booster, making it unable to stop the car with the brake pedal. Luckily there have been no reports of injuries or crashes.
Finding the Recall
The automaker offers free towing to the dealership for emergency service to assist vehicle owners. The recall is for certain GL, ML, and R-Class vehicles made from 2006 through 2012. Owners were notified via letter about the recall at the end of May, but if you did not receive a letter and are unsure if your model has been recalled, go to the NHTSA website and enter your vehicle identification number (VIN) into the search bar.
You can find your VIN on your car's registration card, the lower-left corner of your car’s windshield, or even on your insurance card. The VIN search tool will pull up recalls from the past 15 calendar years and safety recalls from major light auto automakers, motorcycle manufacturers, and some heavy truck manufacturers.
