Study Finds Depo-Provera May Cause Meningioma
A recent study published in the British Medical Journal found a highly concerning link between Depo-Provera use and the development of meningioma. Researchers looked at healthcare records of over 108,000 women who underwent surgery for meningioma from 2009-2018. Based on their findings, women who used the injectable birth control drug Depo-Provera at least once within the year preceding surgery had over five-times increased risk of developing meningioma compared to women who did not use Depo-Provera.
Is Meningioma Dangerous?
Depending on where a meningioma forms, it can cause a variety of dangerous health problems.
Symptoms of meningioma can include:
- Seizures
- Headaches
- Memory loss
- Hearing loss or ringing in the ears
- Vision changes, such as double vision, blurred vision, or loss of vision
- Loss of smell
- Weakness in the arms or legs
- Confusion
- Difficulty speaking
- Dizziness
- Nausea and vomiting
Brain surgery is typically required to remove a meningioma. In addition to the problems directly caused by a meningioma, affected women could also be put at risk of any of the many potential side effects and complications associated with brain surgery.
