Essure Birth Control Implant

Essure Birth Control Implant

What Is Essure and How Does it Work?

The Essure birth control implant is a small, flexible metal coil intended to cause permanent sterilization by blocking the fallopian tubes.

Essure is inserted non-surgically through the vagina and placed in the fallopian tubes. Once it is inside the fallopian tubes, the coil reacts with the surrounding tissues, causing fibrosis and scar tissue. After the implant has been in place for at least 3 months, the fallopian tubes become blocked, permanently inhibiting pregnancy by ensuring no sperm reaches the eggs.

After 3 months have passed, recipients undergo a confirmation test in order to evaluate whether the procedure is successful.

Risks of Using Essure

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the Essure in 2002. It is a Class III device, meaning it is highly regulated for assurance of safety and effectiveness. However, increased regulation has failed to prevent recipients from being harmed by the device.

There are currently about 30,000 reported cases of illness, injury, and death resulting from the Essure birth control implant. The FDA has required Bayer to take a number of escalating measures to provide consumers with more information about the product and ensure the informed consent of recipients. As of July 20, 2018, Bayer announced it will no longer sell Essure.

Injuries and Damages Associated with Essure

Many women experience painful side effects after receiving Essure, including:

  • Perforation, puncture, or tearing of the fallopian tubes
  • Migration of the coil(s) into the abdomen or pelvis
  • Irregular vaginal/uterine bleeding
  • Changes in menstrual cycle
  • New allergies or sensitivities
  • Hair loss
  • Migraines and headaches
  • Significant increase or decrease in body weight
  • New pain during sexual intercourse
  • Intermittent or chronic abdominal/pelvic pain

Complications stemming from the Essure implant can lead to physical and emotional suffering, a need for additional surgeries, unintended pregnancy, among other painful side effects. These can lead to reduced quality of life, long-term medical expenses, and other serious damages. If this has happened to you or someone you love, the best thing you can do is connect with an experienced medical device attorney immediately.
