Hip implant manufacturer Stryker voluntarily recalled its Rejuvenate hip replacement system in July 2012. The recall came after thousands of patients with Stryker Rejuvenate implants complained of adverse reactions, even though the system was supposed to be a safer and better alternative to metal-on-metal hip replacements.
The Rejuvenate system uses a ceramic part that prevents metal from rubbing against metal, but other components are made of chromium and cobalt, and the stem is titanium-coated. These metals may still break down and be released into the tissue near the implant, causing a condition called metallosis.
